Tsunami Disaster Relief
Tips for Donating to Charities
As news of this terrible tragedy
continues to worsen, many of us want to
donate to charities assisting the
survivors of the tsunami. We must be
careful though, to be certain our donations
actually do go to disaster relief and
not to inflated administrative expenses
of the charity we choose. Here are a few
suggestions for choosing legitimate
charity organizations:
1. Be suspicious of any charity that you
have never heard of before, and is
contacting you for donations.
2. Be suspicious of appeals that are
emotional, but short on describing what
the charity will do with your donation.
3. Most relief charities prefer
financial contributions rather than
donated goods. This enables them to
purchase needed items near the disaster
relief site for easier distribution, and
that is a legitimate request. But if you
do make
a financial donation, do not give cash.
Make out a check or money order to the
name of the charitable organization, not
to an individual collecting the
donation. Never give your credit card
number or other personal information to
a telephone solicitor or in response to
an e-mail solicitation.
4. If you decide to contribute online,
get details about the charity before
making a contribution, and be aware of
scams. For example, some charities
imitate the name and style of well-known
organizations in order to confuse
people.
5. Never succumb to pressure for
on-the-spot donations. Be extremely
suspicious of a charity that insists on
sending someone to your home or office
to pick up your contribution. This is
often done to avoid violating federal
mail fraud laws.
6. Don't hesitate to ask for written
information describing the charity's
programs and finances, such as the
charity's latest annual report and
financial statements. Even newly created
organizations should have some basic
information available. Be suspicious of
charities that are reluctant to answer
your reasonable questions about their
operations, finances and programs. Ask
how much of your gift will be used for
the activity mentioned in the appeal,
and how much will go toward other
programs and administrative costs.
7. To help ensure your contribution is
tax deductible, the donation should be
made to a U.S. based charitable
organization that is tax exempt under
section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code. Go to
IRS Publication 78 for a current
list of all organizations eligible to
receive contributions deductible as
charitable gifts.
Here are links to several responsible
charities, and to Web sites where you
can get more information about making
charitable donations or volunteering
your time for worthy causes. These
charities do not necessarily have
anything to do with the Asian tsunami.

Cell Phone Safety:
Drive Now, Dial Later
As everyone knows, auto accidents caused by
cell phone use have been on the rise. Here
are some tips for driving and dialing
safely:
● Try to avoid making or taking calls when
you're driving. That's the simplest
solution. If you must make or receive a
call, try to pull off the road to complete
the call.
● Pay attention. Just as it's unsafe to look
at a map or read directions while driving,
it's unsafe to focus on your cell phone
instead of on your driving.
● Memorize the keypad. That way, if you have
to use the phone when you’re driving, you
can find the speed dial and redial features
without taking your eyes off the road.
● Position your phone where you can reach it
easily, without diverting your attention
from driving.
● Take advantage of the hands-free units
that are now available for most cell phone
models so that your hands can remain on the
steering wheel.
● Hang up if conditions become hazardous
(for instance, if the traffic becomes
congested or the weather turns bad) so that
you can pay full attention to the situation
in front of you.
● Try to make calls when your car won’t be
moving for a while, like when you’re stuck
in a traffic jam that shows no signs of
going anywhere.

Our law firm is
currently accepting claims on behalf of consumers
who took the arthritis drugs Vioxx or Celebrex and
then suffered a heart attack, stroke, or other
cardiovascular event. We have been surprised to
learn how many people have found themselves in this
terrible situation.
The U.S. drug
safety officer who warned months ago about risks
from Merck & Co. Inc.'s painkiller has just won
clearance to publish a study arguing that Vioxx may
have caused between 88,000 and 139,000 heart attacks
and strokes.
One rival painkiller, Celebrex, was thought to be
safer — until December 2004, when a new study
suggested that it also posed a greater risk of
cardiovascular events than other pain pills.
If you, a friend, or a family member has suffered
cardiovascular health problems while taking, or
shortly after taking, Vioxx or Celebrex, please
contact our firm immediately. We will be glad to
discuss your situation at no cost to you for the
initial consultation. |

Our law firm has helped thousands of clients
over the years. Sometimes clients who use

realize that there are other legal problems
we could help them solve.
We handle
most types of injury claims — including
automobile collisions, "slip and fall"

defective products, injuries resulting from
inadequate security, medical malpractice
claims, nursing home negligence claims,
prescription drug injuries and many others.
We invite you to call us about any
serious injury to see how we can help you.
Kraft & Associates also represents people
who have been denied their Social Security
Disability benefits. We can help at the
Initial stage, the Reconsideration stage or
the Hearing stage.
Our firm represents people who have been injured on
the job and are making a claim for workers'
compensation. We help people who have problems
regarding family issues, such as divorce, child
support, adoption, modifications, enforcements,
attorney general disputes, paternity and other similar
matters. We also represent clients who have been
arrested or charged with committing a crime.
Please feel free to call us with any
legal questions you may have. If we cannot
