ATM Safety and Fraud Tips

ATM Safety

Although cases of crimes at automatic teller machines are relatively rare, following these guidelines will increase your personal safety when using one:

Be Prepared
Have your transactions ready; seal your checks or cash in an envelope and have your ATM card ready to insert into the machine before you arrive. It is always a good idea to endorse checks with the restriction "For Deposit Only."

Block the View of Others
Always stand between the terminal and any individuals waiting, or cup your hand over the key pad so that you block their view as you enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Complete The Transaction
Retrieve your cash, receipt and card after every transaction and put them away before leaving. If you make a withdrawal, do not expose or count your money until you are in a safe place.

Keep Your Receipts
The receipt is your proof of an ATM transaction. Save your receipts, mark them in your check register and verify the account activity with your monthly statement. Report any unexplained transactions immediately.

Be Cautious After Hours
Park in a well-lighted area and scan the site. If you see anyone or anything that makes you uncomfortable, find another ATM and report the situation to the police. If possible, take a companion with you. Of all considerations, the most important is to be alert!

Be Alert In Your Car
Keep the engine running, doors locked and windows up until you reach the ATM. If someone approaches your vehicle saying they need help, tell them you will call the police for them. Do not allow any unknown person to enter your vehicle when making an ATM transaction.

ATM Fraud

Fraud usually occurs when a card is lost or stolen. To help prevent fraudulent access to your account, remember these guidelines:

Memorize Your PIN
Never disclose your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or loan your card to anyone. Do not write your PIN on your card or anything that you carry with you. If your card is lost or stolen, it cannot be used without your PIN.

Report Lost and Stolen Cards Immediately
Report loss or theft immediately. You could be held liable if you do not report a lost or stolen card.

Never Give Information Over The Phone
If you receive a telephone call from someone requesting your PIN, do not reveal it. No bank will ever ask you for your PIN, especially in the event of a lost or stolen card. Discussions about the status of your account are best held in person rather than on the phone.

Never Withdraw Money For A Stranger
Police officers, law enforcement officials and bank representatives should never ask you to withdraw funds via an ATM. No one has the right to ask or compel you to withdraw funds via an ATM.

Card Protection

Protecting your card is also an important part of use. The following tips can save you time and trouble:

Keep Your ATM Card In A Safe Place
Store or carry your card as safely as you would cash or a credit card.

Record and File Information
Keep a record of your card's source and relevant telephone numbers for reporting its loss.

Protect The Magnetic Stripe
Avoid exposing the magnetic strip on the back of your card to the magnetic strip on your credit cards. Always be sure to protect your card from other magnetic objects. They can render your card useless.

We at Kraft & Associates hope these guidelines will help insure your personal safety and the security of your ATM card.
